Gender inequality remains a persistent challenge within educational systems worldwide, particularly in relation to access, participation, leadership opportunities, and decision-making for girls. Although education policies increasingly emphasize gender equity, disparities continue to manifest in both academic and extracurricular domains, especially in school sports and physical education. This paper critically examines the role of sports in advancing gender equality in schools, with strong emphasis on indigenous African and Nigerian scholarly perspectives, complemented by relevant global literature. Using a qualitative literature review methodology, the study explores how sports participation contributes to girls’ empowerment, leadership development, academic engagement, psycho-social well-being, and the transformation of entrenched gender norms. The paper further identifies sociocultural, institutional, and policy related barriers that limit the effectiveness of sports-based gender equality initiatives in school settings. The discussion highlights the importance of gender-responsive sports policies, inclusive curricula, teacher capacity building, equitable resource allocation, and sustained community engagement. The paper concludes that when intentionally structured and adequately supported, school sports can serve as a Trans-formative platform for achieving sustainable gender equality and inclusive education.
