Sports Programme Sponsorship and Development Sustainability in Ogun State

Abstract

The study examined the relationship between sport programmes sponsorship and development sustainability in Ogun State. A simple random technique was used in the study to select a sample of 250 participants (male, 106 (42.4%) and female, 144 (57.6%), which include athletes, coaches and corporate organizations in Ogun State. A self-developed questionnaire on Sports Programme Sponsorship and Development Sustainability Questionnaire (SPSDSQ) was utilized to elicit information from the respondents. The questionnaire contains two sections: Section “A” on bio-social data of respondents; and Section “B” on sports programme sponsorship and sports development sustainability in Ogun State. The data collected was analyzed using the Multivariate Linear Regression statistics at 0.05 level of significance. Hypothesis one F-value (845.466; P<0.05) indicates that sport programmes sponsorship significantly improved organizations corporate image in Ogun State. Hypothesis two F-value (0.005; P<0.05) reveals that sport programmes sponsorship significantly enhanced sports development in Ogun State. Hypothesis three F-value (9.093; P<0.05) reveals that sport programmes sponsorship significantly boosted sport development sustainability in Ogun State. Riding on this, the study recommends that government should create an enabling economic policy environment that could encourage and stimulate the interest of corporate organisations, agencies, philanthropies and NGOs in sponsoring sport programmes, including sport facilities provision for better sports development and sustainability in developing countries, including Nigeria.
