Strategic Approach For Maximising Economic Viability (Gains) Of Organised Sports Competitions

Abstract

This study examined the strategic determinants of economic viability and gains in organised sports competitions, with a focus on selected tertiary institutions in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study was motivated by persistent challenges such as poor financial management, limited revenue diversification, weak stakeholder engagement, and inefficient resource utilisation, which continue to undermine the sustainability of sports competitions in developing sport systems. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The sample consisted of 200 respondents drawn from four institutions: Federal College of Education, Lagos State University, University of Lagos, and Yaba College of Technology. The respondents included coaches, sports directors, financial officers, and marketing personnel. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using regression and Pearson correlation statistics at the 0.05 level of
significance. The findings revealed that strategic management practices significantly enhance the economic viability of organised sports competitions. Specifically, financial awareness, resource regulation, market motivation, and networking skills were all found to exert significant positive influences on economic viability and economic gains. Among these factors, networking skills emerged as the strongest predictor, highlighting the central role of stakeholder relationships in revenue generation and sustainability. The study concludes that economic success in organised sports is best achieved through an integrated strategic approach that combines financial intelligence, efficient resource management, market-driven innovation, and effective stakeholder networking. The study therefore recommends deliberate capacity building for sports managers and organisers, improved resource governance structures, and strengthened collaborative partnerships to enhance long-term financial sustainability in organised sports competitions.
