Sports development is an essential component of national development because it promotes youth empowerment, employment generation, national unity, economic growth, and international recognition. Despite Nigeria’s abundant sporting talents, the sector continues to suffer from inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, ineffective management, and excessive dependence on government financing. This paper examines privatization and commercialization as innovative strategies for revitalizing sports development in Nigeria. It argues that increased private sector participation through investment, sponsorship, facility management, broadcasting rights, merchandising, and public-private partnerships (PPPs) can transform sports into a viable industry capable of generating revenue and creating employment. The paper concludes that adopting transparent policies, strengthening institutional frameworks, and encouraging private investment are indispensable for sustainable sports development in Nigeria. Recent analyses of Nigeria’s National Sports Industry Policy emphasize moving sport from a government-driven social service toward an industry that attracts private investment and contributes to economic development.
